Weekly Top 5

As a college freshman, I used to post a crazy question as my "away message" on AIM each night before I went to bed. Each morning, I would go through the answers and select the best one. The winner received a nickel from me (yes, I actually paid up). Thus, Zach's Nightly Nickel Giveaway was born.

So, in an attempt to spark more music conversation on this site, I am taking a page from my old playbook, modifying it of course for my new constituents.

Welcome to the Weekly Top 5!

Each Monday, I will post a category to which you, the reader, will answer with your Top 5 songs/albums/etc... Each week I will sort through the responses (hopefully) and select the best one to receive a special CD in their next month's mailing. Each CD will be unique and guaranteed ZZIPA approved!

For the inaugural Top 5, I want to go straight to the top! Here is your scenario:

You've just been hit with the 5 Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique but instead of having only 5 steps to live, you have 5 songs. Yep, 5 songs to listen to and then you die. What are the last 5 songs to enter your ears before you're on to the afterlife?

Zach's Last 5
(not in order)

1. Weezer - Buddy Holly
2. Leonard Cohen - Bird on the Wire
3. New Order - Ceremony
4. Youngblood Brass Band - Elegy
5. Maceo Parker - Tighten' Up

What do you think of my choices? What are yours? Comment below and a CD could be in your future!

6 comments:

  1. Not in order. You can judge if you want to - I judge myself.

    1. Motorcycle Drive By - Third Eye Blind

    2. Sweet Caroline - The One, The Only, Neil Diamond

    3. For Nancy - Pete Yorn

    4. Monster - Abandoned Pools

    5. Don't Go Breakin' My Heart - Elton John & RuPaul

*1. No, really. It's my favorite song of all time, and not just because he sings my name.
*2. We, as a society, need to bring the pop trumpet back.
*5. None of that Kiki Dee bullcrap. Find the Elton and RuPaul version, and if you're not shaking your shoulders AT THE VERY LEAST by the time they start singing, then we are no longer friends. The video is fabulously and infectiously gay.

  2. Ah crap. I already want to change my response. This is much tougher (and more embarrassing) than your nickel giveaway, although still fun :)

  3. My Top 5!

    1. Sleepyhead - Passion Pit
    2. Shimmer - Fuel
    3. Notion - Kings of Leon
    4. Ali in the Jungle - The Hours
    5. The Scientist - Coldplay

  4. The cop-out would have been to choose really long songs in order to prolong my life. I think these are the five songs I would pick, but I know my dying words will be "wait, wait, I should have picked..."

    (In no particular order whatsoever)

    1. Nate Dogg and Warren G - Regulate
    2. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
    3. The Beatles - Golden Slumbers*
    4. Ahmad Jamal - Poinciana
    5. Umphrey's McGee - Pequod

*I chose this with the understanding that the rest of Abbey Road would be played. If you're gonna be a dean about it and claim that it's more than one song, I would choose Miles Davis "In a Silent Way" instead.

  5. The winner of the first ever Weekly Top 5 is our good friend Blu! Trust me...it was hard to say no to a Pete Yorn/Abandoned Pools combo and both Nate Dogg AND Warren G, but Kings of Leon, Passion Pit, and The Scientist make for quite a final top 5. Thanks for all who participated (yup...all 3 of ya!) Tell your friends and try again next week.

P.S. Everyone should watch the Elton and RuPaul video! Like go to YouTube now!

  6. You danced, didn't you!? It's involuntary for me.

Hey, hey, I'm going to see Elton John April 17! I will never pay that much for a ticket again, but I have a feeling it will be worth every penny.
